The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds #1)

Goodreads Summary
When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that gets her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government "rehabilitation camp." She might have survived the mysterious disease that's killed most of America's children, but she and the others have emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she's on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her-East River. She joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can't risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living

What Did I Think?
After quite a few so-so reads these past few months, this book deserves the 5 star rating I am giving it. It's been awhile since I've read something that really captured my attention (the last series to do that was the Lunar Chronicles) and I desperately needed this. I did not want to put this book down.

The Darkest Minds starts out in a present day concentration camp. We meet Ruby who has been in a camp for many years and is struggling with who she is and camp life. Who is she you ask? She's special. The year Ruby turned ten the world changed. Children are dying. All of them. Well maybe not all of them, but the ones that survive are left with special abilities. The government fears them and sends them to concentration camps to "rehabilitate".

I fell in love with Ruby. This girl has been dragged through the mud, but through it all she just wants what's best for those around her. She never thinks of herself first. Ever. Chubs is a sweetheart. He reminds me of a cross between River Phoenix's characters in Explorers and Running on Empty  (check those both out if you haven't seen them). He's ridiculously smart and fiercely protective. Then there's Liam. *sigh* Liam is my favourite book boyfriend at the moment. You can tell that he falls for Ruby hard, but he never pressures her to feel the same way. He's there when she needs her and patiently waits for her to move the relationship along. I can't wait to see what he gets up to in Never Fade

If you like Young Adult books than give this a shot! I think you'll love it.
